Getting Started

Welcome to OneTime, a multiplatform mobile phone messaging service that uses your phone's internet connection to chat with other OneTime users.

Before you download and install OneTime, make sure OneTime supports your phone type. Please check this here.

To download OneTime, visit this link on your phone or go to the Google Play Store or the iTunes App Store. Once installed, ensure that the friends who you wish to message have OneTime installed on their phones. If they do not show up under the Contacts screen, please read here how to add contacts to OneTime.

If your contact is visible in OneTime, select their name and click on it. Now you can message your friend, and also send them media via the options in the chat screen. Happy chatting!

What are the advantages of OneTime?

OneTime is a cross-platform mobile messaging app which allows you to exchange messages and stay in touch with your friends without having to pay for SMS.
Here are some of the key advantages of OneTime:

  • OneTime is available for both for iPhone and Android. Please check here for phone’s technical requirements.
  • OneTime is a perfect alternative to SMS since it uses your phone’s Internet connection so you not have to pay for every message. As long as you have not exceeded your data limit or you are connected to a free Wi-Fi network, messaging over OneTime does not cost you extra. More details concerning cost are available here.
  • You can use OneTime on Multiple Devices even on WiFi-Only devices. For more information on multiple device code, please read here.
  • After you downloaded OneTime you have no annual fees and no additional costs provided you have an adequate data plan. More details concerning cost are available here.
  • No backup of messages, pictures or other files is kept on the server. After delivering the message it will be irretrievably deleted from our server making your messages completely private and safe. To learn more about the security and privacy of the messages, please read here.
  • With downloading the app and registering your phone number you get one share of the company and become a shareholder. If you convince a friend to use OneTime you get one additional share of the company for each friend registering. For more information on inviting friends, please read here.

Why is messaging with OneTime secure?

Messaging with OneTime is 100% secure and private since the connections to OneTime servers are encrypted and therefore contents of messages are encrypted. Messages that have been delivered by the OneTime Service are not copied, kept or archived by OneTime. The OneTime Service is meant to be a SMS replacement, using data service through a user’s phone (either via cell network or wifi).

Users type their messages, which are sent via data service to our servers, and routed to the intended recipient (who must also be a OneTime user), if that recipient is online. If the recipient is not online, the undelivered message is held in OneTime’s server until it can be delivered. If the message is undelivered for maximum thirty (30) days, the undelivered message is deleted from our servers.

Once a message has been delivered, it no longer resides on our servers. The contents of any delivered messages are not kept or retained by OneTime — the only records of the content of any delivered messages reside directly on the sender’s and recipient’s mobile devices.

How to register with OneTime for the FIRST TIME?

After downloading the app from the Google Play Store or the iTunes App Store you have to register your phone number to use OneTime.

  • When registering OneTime the number you are registering has to be the one linked to your current SIM card because you have to send a SMS from your phone.
  • For a successful registration you have to send a SMS from your phone and you’ll have to wait for confirmation from the server.

  1. Enter the phone number for your phone.
    • Type your country code in the box on the left.
    • Enter your phone number in the box on the right. Do not put any leading 0s before your number!
  2. Click Next and confirm on the next screen that your number is correct.
  3. You have to accept the Terms of service and privacy policy.
    • Click on Terms of service and privacy policy to read them. To accept the Terms of service and privacy policy slide the marker to on.
    • ONLY if you were invited by a friend please enter the invite code you received with the invitation in the box on the right. If you didn’t receive an invitation leave the box blank.

  4. Click Register (Send SMS) and wait for confirmation from server. You should now see a time counter that counts from 1:20 downwards. After you received the confirmation you have successfully registered with OneTime.
    • If registration was not successful and the counter run out, then you need to resend the SMS by confirming "Trying again?"
    • For a successful registration you have to send a SMS from your phone and you’ll have to wait for confirmation from the server.
  5. Enter Name which other users see if you are not in other users' phone book and press Next.
    • Click the camera symbol to upload a profile picture
  6. Now you are ready to start chatting with your friends!

Why is my registration not successful?

To register the app successfully you need to send a SMS to the server. A common error is that the SMS is being sent from a number being different than the number that was entered on the registration screen. For example the SMS was sent from +44 744 902808 7 but you entered the mobile number like +44 744 90280 8. If this is the case registration will not work. Also make sure when registering you have a good reception e.g. like 3G or WIFI.

Is my device supported?

Android:
We support all Android phones provided they meet the following requirements:
  1. Your Android phone is running Android OS 4.0 or later.
  2. Your Android phone is able to send SMS during the verification process.
  3. You have the latest version of Goggle Play Services installed.
You will also need an adequate data plan in order to receive messages when outside the range of a Wi-Fi network.

iPhone:
OneTime for iPhone requires iOS 8 or later and is able to send SMS during the verification process.
For the best experience, we recommend you use the latest version of iOS available for your phone.
We do not explicitly restrict the use of jailbroken or unlocked devices, but because these modifications may affect the functionality of your device, we cannot provide support for devices using modified versions of the iPhone's operating system.

Tablets, iPads or Wi-Fi only devices:
We do not support tablets or Wi-Fi only devices for making the initial registration since for a successful registration you have to send a SMS from your phone. After a successful registration with your phone you can use your tablets or Wi-Fi only device using the Multiple device code. For more information on multiple device code, please read here.

If you try to download OneTime on an unsupported device, you should receive a message that your device is not supported and you will not be able to download OneTime.

How to generate Web Access Password?

To generate the Web Access Password
  1. Open OneTime app in your mobile.
  2. Go to the Menu
  3. Go to Settings
  4. Go to Account
  5. Select Web Access Password.
  6. Your personal one-time valid password is displayed.

Web Access Password is case sensitive and valid for only one login attempt. You will need to generate a new Web Access Password for every new login attempt.

What does “Already have an account” mean?

The “Already have an account” option should only be selected if you want to install OneTime on another device with the same already registered account.

You can have only one OneTime account registered with your phone number, but you can use the same account on various devices such as tablet, iPad, Desktop or even another phone) using the multiple device code.
With the multi device code we can link your other devices to your phone number that is already registered. You don’t need a sim card in your other device to use OneTime you only need an Internet connection on your device.

If you deleted OneTime and now want to install it on the same phone again you need to make the same steps as for the initial registration, you CANNOT USE “Already have an account” option!

What is an invite code?

In order to chat with your contacts on OneTime, both parties must have the OneTime application installed and activated on their phones. If you got an invitation to use OneTime via SMS, Email or Twitter from one of your friends you also got a 7 digits invite code. This code helps us to keep track of who invited you and to manage incentive programs.

How can I invite my friends to join OneTime?

In order to chat with contacts on OneTime, everyone must have the OneTime application installed and activated on their phones. If some of your friends and family are not yet on OneTime, it is easy to invite them to join in!

To send an invitation go to Menu > Settings > Tell a friend. This allows you to send an SMS, email or a Tweet with a download link and an Invite Code. The invite code is important and helps us manage incentive programs for each new registered friend you invited.

How do I receive shares when someone enters my invite code?

When someone enters your invite code during registration and registers the app successfully you will receive an additional share of OneTime.World Plc automatically.

It can take up to 30 min for your additional shares to show up in your shareholder account. If after this time the additional share is not added to your shareholder account get in contact with us here.

To see your shares you have to log in to the shareholder register.

Can I use OneTime on multiple devices?

How do I use One Time on multiple devices?

Your OneTime account can only be registered with one number but you can use it on other devices using the multiple device code.

To Creating the multiple device code
  1. Open OneTime on your initially registered phone
  2. Go to the Menu
  3. Go to Settings
  4. Select Multiple device code
  5. You will get a 4 letter code
  6. Keep your screen on or write it down

Using the multiple device code on another device
  1. Download OneTime from this link
  2. Start installation on the new device
  3. Instead of entering your phone number click on “Already have an account
  4. Enter your Multipe Device Code and click Next
  5. Confirm on the pop up that your number is correct
  6. You will now see your profile as it is on the initial device

Is it free to send messages over OneTime?

OneTime uses your phone’s Internet connection (4G/3G/2G/EDGE or Wi-Fi, as available) to send and receive messages to your friends and family. You do not have to pay for every message. As long as you have not exceeded your data limit or you are connected to a free Wi-Fi network, messaging over OneTime should not cost you extra.

OneTime Calling/Video Calling works in the same way but you need at least a 3G or even better a Wi-Fi connection. To learn more about making calls/video calls over OneTime, please read here.

Please be aware of the following:
  • If your phone is roaming, additional mobile data charges may apply.
  • If you send SMS messages/E-Mail to your friends inviting them to use OneTime, service charges from your mobile provider may also apply. Additional details on inviting friends to OneTime can be found here.

Why don't I get new messages and notifications?

To be informed about a new message immediately notification should be turned on.

Please verify that your notification settings are turned on in both your OneTime and phone settings. To ensure the prompt delivery of OneTime notifications, please check that you have a good Internet connection and your phone Sound & notification settings is configured properly.

OneTime Settings
  1. Open OneTime and go to > Settings > Notifications
  2. Enable Notifications for Messages and Groups
  3. Go to In-App Notifications
  4. Set your preferences for Alert style (Banners, Pop-up alert, or None)
  5. Enable Sound and Vibrate


Android Settings
  1. Go to Android Settings > Apps > OneTime
  2. Select show notifications

iPhone Settings
  1. Go to iPhone Settings > OneTime > Notifications
  2. Allow Notifications
  3. Enable Show in Notification Center, Sounds and Badge App Icon
  4. If you want notifications to appear when your phone's display is off, enable Show on Lock Screen.
  5. Set your preferences for Alert style (Banners, Pop-up alert, or None)

I don’t receive notifications anymore after an App update

To be informed about a new message immediately notification should be turned on.

If you don’t receive Notifications anymore after installing an update for OneTime Messenger, check if the notification settings in the app and on your phone are still turned on, if you still don’t get notifications proceed with the following steps:
  1. Uninstall the App from your phone
  2. Reboot your phone
  3. Download and install the App again

My app crashes when I try to send a message to a user

If OneTime Messenger is crashing when sending a message, it is likely due to a corrupt installation. If this is the case you can try the following. Try to close the app with the task manager and start it again. If the app still crashes when sending the message, proceed with the following steps:
  1. Uninstall the App from your phone
  2. Reboot your phone
  3. Download and install the App again

Why does OneTime use my phone number and my address book?

We ask for your phone number because that is how OneTime routes chat messages between you and your contacts, similar to how the SMS system would.

Your address book data is private to you. No one else using OneTime has access to your address book data, unless you share the data. We value your privacy and we have not, do not, and will not ever sell your personal information to anyone. If you would like to learn more about our Privacy Policy, please take a look at our Privacy Notice. In order to prevent and reduce unsolicited spam messages, as well as to improve your in-app experience, OneTime uses the phone numbers from your phone's address book. OneTime does not store any of your information on anyone else's systems. OneTime looks at the phone numbers in your address book, then checks to see which of those numbers are verified in OneTime. This allows any OneTime user from your address book to appear as contact in your Favorites screen and appear highlighted in your Contact screen. During this entire process, only the phone numbers are sent to OneTime for lookup, securely, over an encrypted connection. No other information, such as names, emails, and addresses are sent. So that you know who you are chatting with, the app then displays the names from your address book.

How do I add contacts to OneTime?

OneTime can find which of your friends are using OneTime quickly and easily. OneTime reads your contacts' phone numbers from your phones address book and automatically adds them to OneTime. Your contacts that have OneTime accounts will automatically appear in the Contacts list in OneTime.

If you would like to add a new contact to your Contacts list on OneTime, simply enter their name and number into your phone's address book, then refresh your Contacts list:

Android
  1. Enter your contact in your phone’s address book
  2. Open OneTime.
  3. Go to the Contacts tab the Refresh button.

iPhone
  1. Enter your contact in your phone’s address book
  2. Open OneTime.
  3. Go to the Contacts tab.
  4. Scroll all the way to the top of the list, then "pull down" the list to refresh the Contacts.

When you are adding contacts who live in other countries, make sure that you enter their phone number in the full international format. The format is:
  • + [Country Code] [Full Phone Number].
  • Also be sure to omit any leading 0's from the phone number.

How do I filter my contacts in OneTime for Onetime Users?

If you type in search box the word "OneTime" then all OneTime Users in your phone book will be displayed.

What are those check marks next to my messages?

Check marks will appear next to each message you send. Here is what each one indicates:
  • message successfully sent.
  • message successfully delivered to the recipient's phone.
  • a ‘seen by’ message indicates that the recipient has read your message.

In a group chat, the second check mark will appear when all participants in the group have received your message.

If you only see a single check mark next to your message, there is likely nothing wrong with OneTime or your phone. There may be several reasons why your message has been sent, but not delivered to your chat partner:
  • Their phone might be off.
  • They might have turned notifications off on their device, to learn more about notifications see here.
  • They could be sleeping, especially if they live in a different time zone.
  • They might be experiencing network connection issues.
  • They might have seen the notification on their screen, but did not launch the app.
  • They might have blocked you.

What is a Group Chat?

The Group Chat feature lets you chat with a group of people at once. It is a great way to stay in touch with your family, friends and colleagues. In addition to the maximum number of people you can add to a group, there are a few more things to keep in mind about Group Chat:
  • There is no limit on members of a group but we recommend less than 100
  • There is no limit to the number of groups you can create.
  • Every group has one admin. Only the admin can add or remove participants.
  • Only an admin can make another participant to be the sole admin.
  • If the admin leaves the group, a new admin will be randomly assigned.
  • You can always control your own participation in a Group Chat, by staying in or leaving the group when you wish. Remember that only the group admin has the ability to add participants. If you have any questions about being added to a group, or prefer not to be added, please speak to the group admin.
  • If you have blocked a contact, you will still receive messages this contact sends into any group you have in common. Likewise, they will still receive messages you send to those groups.

How do I use Group Chat?

Group Chat is a great way to stay in touch with family, friends or colleagues. Learn more about Group Chat features below:

Creating a group
You may create an unlimited number of groups. For each group you are automatically the admin. To create a group:
  1. Open OneTime and go to the Groups screen.
  2. Tap the plus symbol
  3. Type in a Group Name. This will be the name of the group that all participants will see.
  4. If you want you can add an icon for the group by tapping on the empty photo box. This will show up next to the group in your Chats list. Choose to use your camera or select a picture from the gallery, crop the picture if necessary and click SEND.
  5. Select the group participant by clicking on the boxes next to their name
  6. Tap Create when you are finished.

Adding participants
You must be the group admin to add participants to an existing Group Chat. To add participants:
  1. Go to the group in OneTime.
  2. Tap the menu button of the group.
  3. Tap Manage members
  4. Select the Invite tab
  5. Select contacts to add to the Group Chat by clicking on the boxes next to their name.
  6. Click on the check mark on top to confirm

Removing participants
You must be the group admin to remove participants from an existing Group Chat. To remove participants:
  1. Go to the group in OneTime.
  2. Tap the menu button of the group.
  3. Tap Manage members
  4. Select the Remove tab
  5. Select contacts to remove from the Group Chat by clicking on the boxes next to their name.
  6. Click on the check mark on top to confirm

Assigning a new admin to a group
A group can only have one admin. If you assign someone else as admin you will be treated as a normal participant of the group chat from then on. To make a participant the admin:
  1. Go to the group in OneTime.
  2. Tap the menu button of the group
  3. Tap Show Group
  4. Tap Set next to new admin
  5. Select the new admin from the participant list.

Changing the group name
You must be the group admin to change its subject. To do so:
  1. Go to the group in OneTime.
  2. Tap the menu button of the group
  3. Tap Show Group
  4. Click on the group name
  5. Enter a new name for the group, then tap OK.

Changing the group icon
You must be the group admin to change its icon. To do so:
  1. Go to the group in OneTime.
  2. Tap the menu button of the group
  3. Tap Show Group
  4. Click on the camera symbol on the group picture
  5. Choose to use your camera or select a picture from the gallery
  6. Crop the picture if necessary and click SEND.

Deactivate the group
As an admin you can deactivate a group anytime. If you deactivate a group, all participants will still see the group in their Chats list and their chat history but if any participant tries to send a message he will get a notification that the group is currently not active. To deactivate a group:
  1. Go to the group in OneTime.
  2. Tap the menu button of the group
  3. Tap Deactivate

Reactivate the group
Only t admin you can reactivate a group. To reactivate a group:
  1. Go to the group in OneTime.
  2. Tap the menu button of the group
  3. Tap Activate

Exiting a group
If you exit a group, you will no longer see the group in your chats list and the chat history will be erased. If you are the group admin you cannot exit the group before you have assigned a new admin. To exit a group:
  1. Go to the group in OneTime.
  2. Tap the menu button of the group
  3. Tap Leave Group.
  4. Confirm that you want to leave the Group with YES.

Deleting a group
Only an admin you can delete the group. When you delete the group, you will no longer see the group in your chats list and the chat history will be erased. The other participants will still see the group in their Chats list and their chat history but if any participant tries to send a message he will get a notification that the group was deleted. To delete a group:
  1. Go to the group in OneTime.
  2. Tap the menu button of the group
  3. Tap Delete Group.
  4. Confirm that you want to delete the Group with YES

Making a phone call/video call via OneTime

With OneTime Calling/Video Calling, you can place a call to your friends using OneTime for free, even if they’re in another country. OneTime Calling/Video Calling uses your phone’s Internet connection rather than your cellular plan’s voice minutes. Data charges may apply.

Make a OneTime call
  1. open the chat with the person you want to call
  2. tap on the options button on top and select Call
  3. Wait for your contact to pick up
  4. If your contact is not available you get the option to leave a message or to call his number the normal way.

Receiving a OneTime call
When someone calls you, you will see an incoming OneTime call screen. You can tap
  1. The green button to answer the call,
  2. The green camera button to answer as video call or
  3. Tap the red button to decline the call.

If you answer as video call your camera will be activated automatically and your contact will get informed that you replied with video call. Your contact then can then decide if he also wants to activate video call. If he doesn’t activate video call then both will only see your video feed.

Make a OneTime video call
  1. Open the chat with the person you want to call
  2. Tap on the options button on top and select video call.
  3. Wait for your contact to pick up.
  4. If your contact is not available you get the option to leave a message or to call his number the normal way.

To make a successful video call your contact has to activate his camera during the call, either with accepting the call with the camera button or pressing the camera button during the call. If he doesn’t activate video call then both will only see your video feed.

Receive a OneTime video call
When someone video calls you, you will see an incoming OneTime call screen. You can tap
  1. The green button to answer the call,
  2. The green camera button to answer as video call or
  3. Tap the red button to decline the call.

If the caller made a video call to you, you can decide if you want to activate the camera or not. To do this you can either take the call with the green camera button and your camera will be activated automatically or you can press the camera button during the call to activate your camera. Both parties can activate and deactivate their cameras at will during the call and therefore change a call to a video call or the other way round.

Note: you can’t access 911 and other emergency service numbers through OneTime. You must make alternative communication arrangements to make emergency calls.
